Tennis is a game that may appear effortless on a television screen but is impossible to excel at on the court without practice. Over the years, this popular “participation” sport has certainly had high-rating moments as a spectator sport as well. Here are some of the top male tennis players of all time:


1) Roger Federer: This tennis player is often known as the greatest player of all time. He has claimed a whopping 17 Grand Slam titles so far – a record – in addition to claiming 36 Grand Slam quarterfinal successes. Federer has been such a long-time player because he plays gracefully and thus has been able to prevent injuries that many other tennis players have had to endure.

2) Pete Sampras: This player is perhaps best known for the exceptional 286 weeks he spent ranked as No. 1 in the world. He has claimed seven Wimbledon titles and is especially popular because of his stellar one-handed backhand.

3) Ivan Lendl: This player won a total of eight Grand Slams in the 1980s during his outstanding 19 appearances in finals. His expertise has improved the career of well-known player Andy Murray, and he is one of the top players to have spent several weeks at No. 1 – being behind only Federer and Sampras.

4) Jimmy Connors: This professional tennis player was most popular in the 1970s, when he remained No. 1 in the world for a whopping 159 straight weeks. He claimed two Wimbledon wins and five U.S. Open victories. What makes this player even more unique, however, is that he proved that age was no match for him: At 39 years old, he made it to the U.S. Open semifinals in the early 1990s – and he was just 5 feet 10 inches, shorter than most of his competitors.
